How to Use the Circle of Fifths

The Circle of Fifths arranges all 12 notes by the interval of a perfect fifth, making scales and keys easy to visualise. Moving clockwise adds one sharp; counter-clockwise adds one flat.

Use this tool by selecting a mode, scale and key from the dropdowns, then click on any note or chord on the wheel to hear it. You can use the circle in both Notes and Chords mode. Finding it too complex? Try Simplified mode, which shows only the diatonic notes or chords — these are the notes and chords built from the notes in the selected scale.
